Offering Obligatory Prayer Behind One who Is Offering Nafl: Permissible?

Offering Obligatory Prayer Behind One who Is Offering Nafl

Question:

Someone missed the Fajr (Dawn) prayer because of coming late to the mosque while the Imam had just finished the prayer. If I already offered the Fajr Prayer in congregation, can I lead him with the intention of praying the nafl (Sunnah) prayer?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.

It was narrated that Jabir Ibn `Abdullah narrated that Mu`adh would pray along the night prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He then came to the mosque of his people and led them in prayer. (Muslim)

Imam An-Nawwai said, “In this hadith we see that it is permissible for one who is offering an obligatory prayer to pray behind one who is offering a nafl prayer, because Mu`adh used to offer the obligatory prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so he discharged his duty, then he would pray the second time with his people, so it was voluntary for him and obligatory for them. This is stated clearly elsewhere than in Muslim, and this is permissible according to Imam ASh-Shafa`i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others.”
