Question:

I know this may sound a little naive but how would I dress for a Muslim funeral?

Salam dear Rich,

Thank you very much for your question. All questions are important as long as they are concerned with how you get closer to God and how to embrace Islam in your daily life.

Islam is built on five pillars, i.e. to testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger, to pray five times a day, to pay the obligatory Zakah, to fast during the month of Ramadan, and to perform Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca once in your lifetime.

There are six articles of faith in Islam. To believe in Allah, to believe in the angels, to believe in the divine Scripture, to believe in the messenger, to believe in the Last Day and to believe in the divine destiny.

Once you have a solid belief in these six article, you are a complete Muslim.

There are different types of prayers in Islam. When a Muslim passes a way, there is a certain kind of prayer offered on his dead body before he is put in the grave. This type of prayer is called the Funeral Prayer. It has certain form unlike the normal prayer.

There is no specific dress for the Funeral Prayer. You can wear whatever you want as long as you abide by the general conditions of the dress code of Islam. Other than this, it is subject to culture and norms and they have nothing to do with the dress code in Islam.
