Leaving Friday Prayer During a Picnic: Excused?

Friday Prayer on Traveling

Question:

What is the ruling of traveling or going on a picnic on Friday which means that one may miss the Friday (Jumu`ah) Prayer? Is it permissible? Some people especially those who live in the West may have only the Friday to take their kids, and go fishing, hunting or whatever which means that they go out of the town. Hence, they could not find a mosque or an Islamic center on the way. Is it permissible to travel on Friday knowing that it would be hard to attend the Friday Prayer?

Answer:

Before answering this important question, Dr. Muhammad Salah reminds us of the significance and virtues of Friday and its Prayer. Allah Almighty has revealed a whole surah of the Qur’an and called it Surat Al-Jumu`ah. There is a verse in this surah which says:

O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu`ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. (Al-Jumu`ah 62:9)

Besides offering the prayer as a duty that we owe to Almighty Allah, it is a means to expiate our sins. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The five daily (prescribed) prayers, and Friday (prayer) to the next Friday (prayer), and the fasting of Ramadan to the next Ramadan, is expiation of the sins committed in between them, so long as major sins are avoided.” (Muslim)
