What Is the Age of Puberty?

Age of Puberty

Question:

What is the age of puberty upon which a Muslim must observe prayer and fasting?

Answer:

A Muslim must perform prayer, fasting, pilgrimage or other mandatory acts of worship when one reaches the age of puberty. `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “There are three (persons) whose actions are not recorded: a sleeper till he awakes, an idiot till he is restored to reason, and a boy till he reaches puberty.” (Abu Dawud)

The symptoms of the age of puberty are as follows:

1- Experiencing the monthly period (menstruation) for females.

2- Experiencing the wet dream for both males and females.

3- Growth of coarse hairs around the private parts.

4- The age of fifteen.

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah explains in detail the symptoms of puberty for both males and females. He also gives some precious advice to parents regarding teaching their children at young age so that they get familiar with acts of worship.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Teach a boy Salah (the prayer) when he attains the age of seven, and punish him (if he does not offer it) at ten”. (Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi)
