What Is the Intention For Friday Prayer?

The Intention for Friday Prayer

Question:

I would like to know what should the intention for the Jumu`ah (Friday) prayer be.

Answer:

`Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intention and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.” (Agreed Upon)

There is a consensus among scholars that the place of the intention is the heart. There is no need to utter the intention with the tongue. It has not been authenticated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ever uttered the intention, nor his guided companions, the four scholars of Fiqh, or the scholars who followed them. Therefore, if one wants to offer prayer, he just performs ablution, faces the Qiblah (direction of prayer), intends to pray in his heart, and continues his prayer without saying, “I intend to pray such and such”.

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah stated that the intention is something between a slave and His Lord. There is no need to pronounce it as its place is the heart.
